Even though the 49ers defense isn’t a a pressure scheme, Hafley said people will see some exotic looks and pressures on certain downs and distances.

He worked in the Rex Ryan defense under Mike Pettine in Cleveland and learned a lot about pressure.

For years, the Packers’ defense has been at their best when they are getting pressure on the quarterback.  That is exactly what Hafley intends to do.

LaFleur said that scheme wasn’t as important to him with the Hafley hire as style of play. And he said the hallmark of the 49ersJets and Texans defenses — all similar to what Hafley will run — is they are physical and relentless. “It just comes down to that style.”

The Packers ranked 16th in sacks last season with 45.  Getting that number into the top ten or even top five would do wonders for this defense.  The Packers have studs at OLB like Rashan Gary, Preston Smith, and Lukas Van Ness.  Getting the most out of their game will be a top priority for Hafley’s defense.
