Wolves are bottom of the Premier League table after six games, and lost their latest match to Liverpool – and pundit Tony Cascarino has noticed a worrying trend.

Gary O’Neil‘s side fell to defeat once more at Molineux on Saturday night.

Wolves were positive in the first-half and for parts of the second, but lacked cutting edge and also urgency at the end, which frustrated fans and pundit Gary Neville.

Ibrahima Konate nodded Liverpool in front just before half-time, but Wolves gave themselves hope when Rayan Ait-Nouri capitalised on a defensive mix-up.

But just moments later, Nelson Semedo bundled Diogo Jota over in the box and Mo Salah scored the penalty.

It was extremely frustrating to see Wolves conceding so quickly after getting back on level terms, and Tony Cascarino has claimed player mistakes are the team’s downfall right now.

Tony Cascarino criticises Wolves as he shares ‘common theme’ he’s noticed

People did not really expect too much from Wolves at the start of this season.

When the fixture list was released, everyone knew it would be tough. Arguably, no other Premier League club has had a more difficult start to the season.

But Wolves have been in games and been in positions to take points.

For pundit Tony Cascarino, there is a ‘common theme’ emerging at Wolves, with players making mistakes to cost the team.

After seeing Semedo concede a penalty against Liverpool, Cascarino said yesterday on talkSPORT: “Look, I will tell you what Wolves are doing. This is getting a really common theme. They are making really poor mistakes. Somebody stepping up. Semedo for the penalty. I mean, Lemina’s pass across his own backline where Mo Salah could have made it

“You know, that’s just football that I sometimes get really frustrated with this type of football where someone is going to make a mistake. And when it’s all different players in the team.

“So, one week it’s Lemina who makes a mistake and then you might go Semedo, and then it moves on to somebody else. There’s always somebody at Wolves who is making a really poor decision that’s costing them dearly.”

O’Neil has been let down at times

O’Neil has made several questionable decisions so far this season, mainly around shoehorning players into alternate positions.

Or giving minutes to out-of-form players, like he did on Saturday when he put Hwang Hee-chan on over Goncalo Guedes.

But there is no doubt that he has also been let down by his players at times this season. As a manager, you can only do so much.

The challenge by Semedo on Jota was clumsy, and O’Neil would have been so frustrated after his side had just equalised.

But on the flip side, you can also argue that O’Neil is encouraging a brand of football that will lead to mistakes, and that the players just aren’t good enough for the high-risk style.
