In the heat of the play-off final loss to Wembley, there were more than a few supporters calling for Farke’s head.
In their opinion, anything other than promotion in 2023-24 – whether automatically or via the play-offs – was considered a failure.
And in fairness, they have a point. However, it must be remembered the mess Farke walked into upon his appointment last summer, which did not arrive until July.
Don Goodman raised the example of Thomas Frank at Brentford as to why Leeds United should not sack Daniel Farke if they make a slow start to next season.
Farke’s job at Elland Road seems safe for now despite missing out on promotion back to the Premier League in his first season in charge, with Leeds losing to Southampton in the play-off final.
However, there have been suggestions the German – who has experience of promotion at Norwich City – will not last long should the Whites start 2024-25 slowly.
In the view of Goodman, though, there should be no need for panic as long as performances are positive.
“Leeds also made a slow start to last season,” Goodman told MOT Leeds News. “The thing is, he then went on to get 90 points last season and would have got more if it wasn’t for that stuttering end. When you look at the history of his Norwich teams, I recall that when he won the title, neither of those seasons did they come flying out of the traps.
“I always go back to Thomas Frank as a great example. He only won one of his first 10 games when taking over at Brentford from Dean Smith. If the powers that be had said ‘one win in 10, let’s get rid’, Brentford wouldn’t be where they are now – an established Premier League club who can now spend decent money on players.
