Leicester City receive huge boost as Abdul Fatawu decision made

The in-form winger has been left out of Ghana’s squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, meaning he will be available to represent the club over the next five weeks

Leicester City have received a huge boost with Abdul Fatawu left out of the Ghana squad for the Africa Cup of Nations.

City will now have their in-form winger available for selection over the course of January and early February, having initially feared he would be the fifth player to link up with their nation for this month’s tournaments, with Kelechi Iheanacho, Wilfred Ndidi, and Patson Daka at Afcon with Nigeria and Zambia, and Harry Souttar with Australia at the Asian Cup. But he was not included in the final 27-man Black Stars squad named on Monday.

Fatawu, who was in Ghana’s squad for the World Cup last winter and, after a period out of the frame, had been involved in the past couple of international breaks, was in the 55-man preliminary squad but has not been selected by Chris Hughton to travel to the Ivory Coast. However, there are suggestions in Ghana that Fatawu may have been behind the decision himself, preferring to stay at City, help their Premier League cause and further his club career rather than sit on the bench with his country

The 19-year-old has become a fan favourite since his arrival on loan from Sporting Lisbon and has contributed a combined nine goals and assists so far this season. Only Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Stephy Mavididi have had a hand in more.
