‘Snap your hand off’ – Departing midfielder predicts Wrexham’s League One finish

Wrexham have been backed to finish in mid-table by departing captain Luke Young, though he hasn’t ruled out another promotion push.

Wrexham achieved back-to-back promotions to rise to League One for the 2024/25 campaign and they’ll be setting lofty ambitions once again as they push through the leagues.

The third-tier presents a real challenge for the Red Dragons as they start to compete on a slightly more level playing field when it comes to finances. There are prestigious clubs who will be looking for eye-catching signings of their own, which have become a regularity at the Racecourse Ground.

The step up to League One marks another new chapter in this exciting story, but one man who will not be a part of it is departing club captain Luke Young.

The long-serving midfielder is moving on upon the expiry of his deal having been with Wrexham since 2018. Now, ahead of next season, Young has predicted where the club will finish.

Speaking on the Rob Ryan Red podcast (quotes via The Wrexham Insider), Young backed the club to finish in mid-table. However, he didn’t rule out another push for promotion with some more strong signings. He said:

“I think, realistically, can it happen? There’s no reason why it can’t with a few more signings, which I’m sure they’ll bring in due course.

“But even if I was still there as a player, if you finish mid-table in League One after getting promoted twice, I don’t think you can look at that as a problem as a fan.

I think the hype of everything, the highs of everything, there’s going to come a time when there’s going to be a little dip. And if that is being stable in League One for next year, I think you should snap your hand off.”

A realistic aim?

Mid-table definitely seems like a good aim for Wrexham.

It’s only natural that they’re setting their aims high after two such impressive seasons but playing in a far more competitive league on a weekly basis will pose challenges. Many of their star men of recent years are now playing at a level they could have been playing at all along, so they’ll now have to adjust back to the standard of opponent.
