Sunderland move on with next manager after Pascal Jansen decision was revealed according to Sky sports Update this Evening

Sunderland are searching for a new manager but have so far not managed to get their man

Pascal Jansen is no longer under consideration for the vacant Sunderland head coach role. The Dutchman had been one of the front runners to become the Black Cats’ next manager, but reports have emerged that the former AZ Alkmaar boss is no longer in the running with Sunderland pushing on with other names on their shortlist.

The Black Cats have been without a permanent manager since Michael Beale’s sacking in February after just twelve games in charge, and the season being allowed to fizzle out into a 16th-placed finish under Mike Dodds’ interim charge.

Former Reims boss Will Still had been persistently linked with the role on Wearside since Beale’s departure, but it is reported that RC Lens are set to appoint the Belgium-born coach, with Still’s U-turn reportedly due to staffing and investment concerns at Sunderland.

As such, the Wearside hierarchy have been forced to pursue other options in their over 100-day long search for Beale’s successor.
Seemingly, this latest development with Jansen leaves former Hull City boss Liam Rosenior leading the race for the Wearside top job.

The 39-year-old was surprisingly sacked by The Tigers in the wake of their seventh-place finish last season. With Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus saying on Friday a decision was ‘imminent’, Rosenior could likely be announced this week as Sunderland’s new head coach.

Fans had become frustrated as opportunities to appoint the likes of Will Still, Bo Svensson and Danny Rohl passed, before Kyril Louis-Dreyfus was forced to make a statement.

The Black Cats owner claimed that an appointment was ‘imminent’ as the club entered the final stages of the process, with Pascal Jansen seeming like the one name that appeared closest to the job.

The 51-year-old had been out of work since leaving AZ Alkmaar earlier this year and was thought to be a hot favourite to take over at the Stadium of Light.

With an appointment surely expected next week, the club’s pursuit has now been plunged into further doubt after it was reported that Jansen is no longer in contention.

Sunderland Echo journalist James Copley wrote on X: “Former AZ Alkmaar boss Pascal Jansen is no longer in the running to become the club’s next head coach. Believe Sunderland are pushing on with other names on their shortlist.”
