England international tipped for Aston Villa return as Wolves track the £13m rated Pedro Neto replacement
Aston Villa are in the market to sign an understudy to top goalscorer Ollie Watkins as they prepare to return to the Champions League for the first time since 1983.
The Villains are keen to go as far as they possibly can in Europe next term, but will need plenty of squad depth if they are to cope with the demands of balancing both a European and domestic schedule, particularly following the introduction of a new format which sees the West Midlands side play eight group stage games instead of six.
With that in mind, Villa have turned their attention to a former fan favourite in Tammy Abraham. The 11-time England international was a roaring success during a loan spell from Chelsea in 2018/19 and registered an incredible 25 goals in 39 appearances to help his side clinch promotion via the Championship play-offs.
Villa pushed to make the deal a permanent after their promotion but then Chelsea boss Frank Lampard made the decision to put the striker into the first team as he scored an impressive 15 goals in 34 games.
The 27-year-old has been largely successful since leaving Chelsea for AS Roma in 2021, though his most recent season was marred by injury concerns.
Villa had pushed to re-sign Abraham on several occasions following his departure and Italian newspaper TuttoMercatoWeb claims that now could be the perfect time for the club to strike a deal with their former fan favourite.
The outlet claims that the Serie A outfit need to raise £10m before June 30 to comply with fiscal regulations and that Abraham could be sacrificed to raise funds.
Only last month he described his season at Villa as: “Probably my best experience. When I look back, I had no regrets. It was an amazing club. I didn’t realise how massive they were until I signed. The promotion was probably one of the best moments of my career so far.”

Wolves winger Pedro Neto has been the subject of interest from a host of Europe’s elite clubs including Newcastle United and Liverpool this summer.
The Portuguese international – priced at around £60m – could be sold if the Old Gold receive a suitable offer this summer. Gary O’Neil is reportedly already planning for such an instance and has turned his attention to Rodrigo Gomes, according to reports from Record – via Sport Witness.

Gomes is a 20-year-old Portuguese U21 international tipped for stardom. The Braga academy graduate made waves with Estoril during a loan spell last season where he registered an impressive seven goals and seven assists in 30 league appearances.
The youngster is capable of playing on either wing and has also showcased his quality in the wingback position on occasions. Reports claim that he is valued at around £13m, though Wolves are not the only interested party with Atletico Madrid also keeping tabs.
