Chris Rigg update now emerges as talks ‘remain ongoing’ over new Sunderland contract
Sunderland are reportedly in talks with a number of their biggest stars over new contracts.
Sunderland face losing some of their prized assets to the Premier League this summer.
The club have been trying to persuade Jack Clarke to stay at the Stadium of Light for some time, but it appears he is likely to make the leap to the top flight.
Reports have also claimed that the Black Cats have opened talks with Dan Ballard, while Dan Neil has recently turned down their opening offer.
Sunderland do have the upper hand in most of their discussions though, with no one’s contract expiry currently an immediate concern.
However, Chris Rigg’s scholarship deal does mean that he could be on his way out this summer if he chooses not to sign a professional contract.
The ‘robust’ midfielder became a key player under Mike Dodds in the second half of the season and went onto attract interest from the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool and Bayern Munich.
Sunderland are eager to keep hold of Rigg, but it was previously claimed that his decision could depend on who the club bring in as their new manager.
Chris Rigg is yet to sign a new Sunderland contract
With Regis Le Bris being announced last week, rumours were swirling that the 17-year-old had put pen to paper on a new deal.
However, journalist James Copley has played down those rumours and has admitted that talks are still ‘ongoing’.
He wrote on X: “I’m told that Chris Rigg hasn’t yet signed a new deal at Sunderland despite social media rumours.
“Situation remains on-going. Club and player have had positive discussions this summer and there is the still a deal in principle.”
The midfielder’s decision will say a lot about Le Bris
If Rigg’s decision was to depend on the new manager appointment, then he could well wait until pre-season training has begun to make a decision.
Like supporters, the teenager is unlikely to know much about Le Bris and will want to scope him out at the Academy of Light first.
If Rigg does sign a new contract then that could be a very promising sign that the French coach is impressing on Wearside, while it will be a slight concern if that is not the outcome.
Rigg will know that Sunderland is the only place he is currently going to get regular first-team football though, so hopefully he is willing to trust in Le Bris to get the best out of him before he inevitably joins a top club in years to come.
