Sean Longstaff set for surprise ban and Newcastle trio at risk

Sean Longstaff will be suspended for Newcastle United’s Carabao Cup quarter-final against Brentford next month after picking up two yellow cards in the competition so far.

Newcastle are once again looking to go one step further in the league cup after a first appearance in the final back in February 2023, but to get to the semi-final we will have to do so without our academy graduate.

After picking up a yellow card in the win against Chelsea just over a week ago, The Mail’s Craig Hope reveals that Longstaff will play no part in the tie against the Bees, and he could be a big miss.

Why Sean Longstaff is banned from Newcastle's Carabao Cup quarter-final against Brentford

The 27-year-old returned to the first team against the Blues after a spell out to make room for the returning Sandro Tonali, and in the two games he has played – against Chelsea and Arsenal – our midfield has looked more balanced.

Longstaff has received high praise from the likes of Alan Shearer after last Sunday’s win over the Gunners and will no doubt be keen to maintain his place in the team under Eddie Howe. However, to the surprise of many, Carabao Cup booking rules will see him miss our meeting with Brentford next month.

As for others who are bordering on suspensions in the Premier League, Fabian Schar, Dan Burn and Joelinton are all just one booking away from a one-match ban.

Trippier hasn’t featured since the 0-0 draw away to Everton on October 5 where he picked up a hamstring injury, while Wilson is yet to kick a ball this season because of a back and hamstring issue.

Both players have recently spent time in the Middle East as part of their recovery and the plan, as per Mail Sport, is to re-introduce after the international break when West Ham United visit St James’ Park on November

“He’s in a good place,” said United head coach Eddie Howe when asked about Trippier last week. “He’s had a little bit of time away from the club due to his injury.
