Harry Maguire sets precedent as Everton hunt deal to sign ‘outstanding’ Jacob Greaves

Harry Maguire is an example of how Hull City can be a “breeding ground for talented young defenders” as Everton chase Jacob Greaves, according to The Athletic.

The news outlet reported on 21 March that Greaves’ form in the Championship has led to interest from Everton and Tottenham, who are said to be tracking the 23-year-old’s progress at the MKM Stadium.

It is understood that 31-year-old Manchester United and England defender Maguire, who left Hull for Leicester in 2017, is an example of how the Humberside club can nurture emerging centre-backs.

Will Everton sign Jacob Greaves in the summer transfer window?

It is all likely to depend on what division the clubs are playing in next season.

Hull are doing well in the Championship with Liam Rosenior’s side sitting in seventh place, just three points shy of the play-off spots with a game in hand on sixth-placed Norwich.

There’s a chance they can go up this season – although it’s a very slim chance based on how well the top-four are doing in the Championship this term.

If they do go up, it’s likely that Greaves will stay on but if they don’t, the centre-back could be on the move.

Rosenior has admitted via HullLive on 2 March that “it’s wonderful” to see speculation surrounding Greaves because it shows that the “outstanding” defender is doing well.

He’s a Premier League player in the making so we’d expect him to be in the top-flight next season with or without Hull City.

The big question is whether Everton will be in the Premier League and if they are, will they be able to compete financially with teams like Spurs?

In all honesty, it seems very unlikely that the Blues will be able to pull off this signing but it’s good to see them having a look at players of Greaves’ ilk.
