Leeds United are now ‘inclined’ not to offer 24-year-old new deal, contract up in the summer
Leeds United have a number of important contract decisions to make at the end of the season.
The Whites have seven players whose deals expire at in the summer, though it would appear for a number of those that the decision has already been made.
Stalwarts Liam Cooper, Stuart Dallas and Luke Ayling are among the group with just a matter of months remaining, and the expectation is they will not be offered fresh terms. The latter moved on loan to Middlesbrough in January, and his exit was an emotional one.
Sam Byram is the only other out and out regular first team player in the same situation, with Jamie Shackleton, Ian Poveda and Lewis Bate making up the rest of the group.
Daniel Farke discussed the possibility of Shackleton being offered a new deal yesterday, but according to the Athletic, a decision has already been taken on Poveda’s future.
Leeds unlikely to offer Poveda new deal
It is said that Leeds are ‘inclined’ not to offer Poveda a new deal and following his loan switch to Sheffield Wednesday on deadline day, he has played his last game for the club.
Farke said after Leeds’ win at Bristol City last week that Poveda had asked to leave the club, as he wanted to go in search of regular game time, that was not happening at Elland Road.
The Leeds manager himself admitted they were ‘reluctant’ on whether to hand Poveda a new deal, but this latest development, his lack of game time, and desire to move to Sheffield Wednesday means the writing is on the wall.
Poveda also spoke of his happiness at leaving the club last week and given it is only a loan move to South Yorkshire, he’ll now have to really prove himself to earn a permanent contract somewhere.
With all that said, this summer really does feel like it could be a changing of the guard at Leeds, regardless of what division they find themselves in.
