Roy Keane criticised the Premier League goalkeeper

‘It’s so poor’ – Roy Keane says Premier League star ‘should be fined one week’s wages

Roy Keane said Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Matz Sels ‘should be fined one week’s wages’ after a ‘poor’ mistake in his team’s Premier League clash with Brighton.

Forest have started the season well after surviving a relegation battle last season, taking eight points from their first four games and stunning Liverpool at Anfield last weekend.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side continued their impressive form by taking an early lead in Sunday’s clash with Brighton, Chris Wood scoring from the spot after Callum Hudson-Odoi was tripped in the box.

Brighton came roaring back to lead 2-1 at the interval, however, Jack Hinshelwood’s powerful header bringing the hosts level before Danny Welbeck’s superb free-kickon the stroke of half-time.

Instead of trying to get the ball up and down over the Forest wall, Welbeck targeted goalkeeper Sels’ side of the goal and beat the Belgian with a strong, curling effort.

It was described as a ‘beautiful’ strike but Manchester United legend Keane slammed Sels’ role in the goal and said it was a mistake that should result in a fine for the Nottingham Forest goalkeeper.

‘The goalkeeper should be fined a week’s wages for that,’ Keane told Sky Sports at half-time. ‘You can’t be beaten on that side, you cannot be beaten on that side.

‘I would fine him a week’s wages, it’s so poor. He’s taken a gamble, leaning to his right. You can’t be beaten on that side.

‘Danny [Welbeck] is a good player, he obviously fancied it. He always affects games. But it’s not good enough from the goalkeeper.’

Reacting to Welbeck’s goal, ex-Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock said on BBC Radio 5 Live: ‘Wow! Danny Welbeck is not renowned for his free-kick taking, but my word.

‘Beautiful technique. Welbeck sets it beyond the right post and brings it back in. The people in front of me are gasping!

‘Hinshelwood ducks underneath it and I am not sure what Matz Sels is doing – he has no reason to not be across that side.’

Former Manchester City star Micah Richards also hailed Welbeck’s effort, adding on Sky Sports: ‘Just look at the pace and the whip and the bend…

‘I didn’t expect him to whip it there, I thought he was going over the wall, but what a hit.’

Nottingham Forest skipper Morgan Gibbs-White and manager Nuno Espirito Santo were sent off at Brighton in a controversial end to the 2-2 draw.

With just under 10 minutes to play, Gibbs-White slid in on Joao Pedro as he chased down the Brighton attacker. It was a forceful challenge, but Gibbs-White won the ball and referee Rob Jones appeared to signal as such.

But there was then a change of mind from the official, who showed a second yellow card to the midfielder, sending him for an early bath. It means Gibbs-White will miss next weekend’s home match against Fulham.
