Darren Moore signs another former Sheffield Wednesday player at Port Vale

Former Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore is overseeing a squad overhaul at Port Vale this summer.

Darren Moore suffered League One relegation with Port Vale last season; just one year after earning promotion from the third tier with Sheffield Wednesday.

It concluded what was a turbulent season for Moore who surprisingly left Sheffield Wednesday in June 2023.

Reports claimed that Moore left Sheffield Wednesday over a feud with owner Dejphon Chansiri regarding his salary.

Moore rubbished claims about his Sheffield Wednesday wage, later taking charge of Huddersfield Town where his tenure would last just 23 games, with three wins to his name.

Moore then took charge of Port Vale in February this year. Though in 17 games, Moore took just two wins, with the Valiants suffering relegation to League Two.

Since, Vale have signed 10 new players including George Byers following his Sheffield Wednesday earlier this summer.

And Moore has now added another former Owls man to his ranks at Vale.

Darren Moore signs former Sheffield Wednesday man Ben Heneghan at Port Vale

Moore has now signed another former Owls man in Ben Heneghan, who’s penned a two-year deal after leaving Fleetwood Town at the end of last season.

Centre-back Heneghan was with Sheffield Wednesday for the 2022/23 promotion-winning season in which he featured 10 times in League One as the Owls earned promotion.

Injury meant that Heneghan barely featured and was eventually released, but he showed a lot of promise when playing for Sheffield Wednesday.

Port Vale eye Darren Moore as top priority in manager hunt

Moore said of the signing: “Ben is another player who I know really well from my time at Sheffield Wednesday.

“He will add real competition to our defensive unit. He is an aggressive, aerially-dominant leader of a centre half and a brilliant character to have in and around the dressing room.”

Darren Moore is repeating Sheffield Wednesday trick at Port Vale

Port Vale are looking like early promotion contenders in League Two under Moore.

And in Moore, the club has a tried and tested, promotion-winning manager to their name, so expect Vale to have high expectations going into next season.

Some of their signings have been very impressive too; Byers is a real coup, with proven Football League names like Jayden Stockley and Ronan Curtis having joined.

And if Heneghan can stay fit then he too will prove to be a good signing for Moore and Port Vale.

This summer overhaul feels very reminiscent of Moore’s two summer overhauls at Hillsborough; largely dominated by free transfers, with the odd bit of star quality thrown in there.

It’ll be very interesting to see how Byers, Heneghan, and Moore fare next season.
