Watch the Moment Taylor Swift’s Dancer Makes Her Accidentally Break Character at the Eras Tour in Germany
The minor gaff came at the end of her first night in Gelsenkirchen, Germany — where she is set to play two more nights this week
Taylor Swift doesn’t need to fake smiles on the Eras Tour stage!
As the pop superstar, 34, performed her first of three sold-out Eras Tour shows in Gelsenkirchen — a mid-sized city in western Germany just north of Cologne, fans spied a funny moment Swift shared with one of her dancers while on stage.
Typically, when the singer transitions into her performance of “I Can Do It with a Broken Heart,” her dancer Kam Saunders typically pretends to hype her up — helping her into a sparkly jacket and even waving to the crowd to cheer.
However, during Wednesday’s show while the dancer was waving Swift’s arms as a part of the bit, the Grammy winner’s indignant face broke into a half smile as she appeared to stifle a laugh, captured in a fan video posted to X (formerly Twitter).
But Swift managed to pull it together — launching into the track off of The Tortured Poets Department right on track.
At the show, she was also visited by her boyfriend Travis Kelce — the 13th Eras Tour show the Kansas City Chiefs tight end has attended. Kelce was spotted in a private suite at the concert, enjoying the show before he’s expected stateside for Chiefs training camp, which begins on July 19.
Though this is the first German stop of the Eras Tour, Swift has been no stranger to Germany on past concert tours. While she skipped over the country for the Reputation Stadium Tour in 2018, the singer played two dates in Germany during the 1989 World Tour, one for the Red Tour and another for the Speak Now tour — though never in Gelsenkirchen.
To welcome the “Fortnight” singer to town, local Swiftie Aleshanee Westhoff started a petition for Mayor Karin Welge to rename the city to “Swiftkirchen” during the star’s tour stop. It clearly caught Welge’s attention because, on July 2, the city unveiled a new town entrance sign with the city’s new temporary name, captured in an Instagram post by the city’s official account. (The account even changed its profile picture to match the color of Swift’s eras!)
Swift’s latest stop on her record-breaking Eras Tour comes on the heels of a two-night stint in Milan last weekend. At the second show, Swift sparked chatter among her fans with a onstage technical mishap — as she began a piano mashup of tracks “Getaway Car” and “Out of the Woods,” the instrument malfunctioned. (“We have finally broken this thing,” Swift joked to the crowd.)
Nonetheless, in an Instagram post after the shows, Swift said performing in the Italian city was “a dream come true” — calling the crowds two of her “favorite crowds ever.”
The “Cruel Summer” singer is set to play two more nights in Gelsenkirchen — or Swiftkirchen — on July 18 and 19, before she takes her act to her next German city: Hamburg.
