The Jets aren’t bringing back Jamal Adams
The NY Jets might be in the market for a safety this offseason. Former Jets safety Jamal Adams could be set to hit the open market if he’s released by the Seattle Seahawks after the season is over.
Could Adams and the Jets reunite in one of the unlikeliest reunions in recent NFL history? No. The short answer here is absolutely not.
The Seahawks officially placed Adams on the injured reserve on Saturday, cutting his season short for the fourth time in four years with Seattle. If reports are to be believed, there’s a good chance the Seahawks cut bait and move on in the offseason.
Releasing Adams would cost the Seahawks a whopping $20.83 million in dead cap, but it might just be worth it to rid themselves of both his hefty contract and his polarizing on-field and off-field endeavors.
But under no circumstances does that mean the Jets should consider bringing him back despite what some have suggested. It’s hard to envision a reality where Adams returns to the Jets under this current regime.
Don’t expect the NY Jets to reunite with Jamal Adams this offseason
Adams’ tenure with the Jets ended under contentious circumstances when the former All-Pro safety requested a trade from the organization that drafted him. This wasn’t a standard trade request either — there was legitimate bad blood between the two sides.
The Jets lucked out in the end, landing two offensive cornerstones in Garrett Wilson and Alijah Vera-Tucker with the draft picks acquired in the Adams trade. As for Adams, his career has tailspinned since leaving to join Seattle.
He hasn’t played more than 12 games in a season in his four years with the Seahawks and was on the verge of being benched for poor performance before Seattle decided to shut him down for the season — possibly to save face from what would have been an embarrassing benching.
Adams’ reputation has taken a nosedive since joining the Seahawks. Not only has his performance on the field been an issue, but he’s been involved in numerous off-field spats, including one with Jets beat reporter Connor Hughes earlier this month.
The Seahawks are ready to move on despite the ridiculous amount of dead cap they’ll be forced to eat. That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement for any team exploring bringing in Adams, especially one he’s verbally trashed over the last few years.
