Atlanta Braves legend gives a shoutout to Tennessee Vols after thrilling 4-1 comeback win over Texas A&M
Many fans of the Tennessee Volunteers happen to be Atlanta Braves fans growing up. That’s the nature of growing up in the South. The Braves have been the regional team and the team shown on TBS and other networks, so that Braves fandom runs deep, even among the Vols’ fanbase.
Those fans were likely thrilled to see one particular former Braves legend shout out the Vols on Sunday evening. After Tennessee rallied from down 1-0 to secure a 4-1 win to force a game three in the College World Series championship series, former Atlanta Braves star Dale Murphy gave some kudos to the Vols. As it turns out, Murphy also gave the Vols a shout before Saturday night’s game, posting a picture of Kirby Connell.
It’s not entirely clear why Murphy is giving some public backing to the Vols, as he was born in Oregon and didn’t play college baseball. However, Tennessee fans are surely appreciative of the encouragement from the two-time National League MVP.
Murphy isn’t the only celebrity who’s backed the Vols during the championship series. He’s not even the only MLB star, as Bryce Harper has previously been seen wearing Tennessee gear before, including this week sporting a Vols jersey. Country music singers Morgan Wallen and Eric Church were also at the game today wearing Tennessee gear.
Murphy, who earned All-Star honors seven times over an eighteen-year career, is a name that probably any casual sports fan at least 40 years old recognizes. Any one from that time frame who wears Tennessee orange very likely does.
As such, perhaps we’ll see if the Braves’ legend has any future support for the Vols if Tennessee can finish off the Aggies and claim their first ever national championship on Monday night in Omaha.
