What Anthony Gordon has been like in Newcastle United training after missing out on Liverpool transfer

Anthony Gordon almost left Newcastle United this summer to join Liverpool.

Things were so desperate that Newcastle were willing to sell Anthony Gordon on the back of the best season of his career.

Newcastle offered Gordon to Liverpool while the 23-year-old was away with England at the Euros, but a deal was not agreed. There were even talks over Joe Gomez joining Newcastle as part of the deal, but Toon officials found another way to comply with PSR.

The summer transfer window closed with Gordon still at St James’ Park, while the new season has started with the £40million man struggling to shine in a black and white shirt.

He has not looked right whatsoever, and there are fears that the failed Liverpool transfer is impacting Gordon’s performances.

However, his attitude behind the scenes has not changed

According to the Telegraph, Gordon is still working very hard during Newcastle United training sessions, while the winger has not asked to leave like he did when he was at Everton and the Magpies made their move.

However, the Telegraph add that Gordon is one of multiple Newcastle United players that is unhappy about the club’s inability to make any major signings during the summer transfer window

It is positive to note that Gordon is still performing on the training pitch. There is no sulking behind the scenes.

But his body language on the pitch is a concern. Gordon was extremely poor against Fulham last week, looking a million miles away from the player that became a fan favorite on Tyneside last season

Hopefully there is an improvement this weekend, when the Magpies face Manchester City at St James’ Park.

Away from his failed move to Liverpool, it is understandable why Gordon – and his teammates – would be upset over Newcastle’s failure in the summer transfer window. None of the signings made have seriously enhanced Eddie Howe’s squad, while the pursuit of Marc Guehi was very public. And it ended with Newcastle missing out.

That must have annoyed Gordon, as he had previously spoken about wanting the 24-year-old to move to the North East. Gordon even alluded to Newcastle failing to sign Guehi during the recent international break, and his face said it all.

Ian Wright says Newcastle’s Eddie Howe is making life difficult for one manager he now feels sorry forHe steered Newcastle clear of relegation and then led the Magpies to the Champions League after finishing fourth in the Premier League.

There was a slight blip last season due to an unprecedented injury crisis but Howe is expected to get Newcastle back into Europe this season.

However, there have been severe growing pains at Newcastle with Howe falling out with sporting director Paul Mitchell over the summer
