Sunderland midfielder’s future is surely in doubt after Ian Poveda signing: View
Sunderland gem proves why Kristjaan Speakman was right to keep him, now it’s down to Regis Le Bris
For Sunderland, deadline day was a manic one.
In total, four new players arrived at the Stadium of Light as Kristjaan Speakman and Sunderland enjoyed an eventful end to what was a previously subdued summer transfer window.
Regis Le Bris now has added depth in his first-team squad ahead of the run in to 2025.
And he’ll be hoping that his new faces can settle in nicely, and help maintain what’s been a quite unprecedented start to the 2024/25 Championship season.
The Black Cats are in 1st place of the table having won all four of their opening league fixtures, beating Portsmouth 3-1 in their last outing.
As well as the club’s new signings, youngster Tom Watson may also be hoping to make his mark in the coming weeks, following his deadline day links to the Premier League.
It was reported that Brighton saw multiple bids for Watson rejected by Sunderland.
The 18-year-old featured just once in the Championship last time round, having been an unused substitute in Sunderland’s last two league fixtures.

Tom Watson message to Kristjaan Speakman after Sunderland U21s performance
On Tuesday, Watson shone for Sunderland U21s in their 3-2 defeat vs Liverpool U21s in the Premier League 2.
Watson scored the young Black Cats’ second goal, weaving through several players before finishing.
Sunderland Echo gave him an 8/10 rating, adding:
“Looked a handful as usual… Looked more of a threat when he moved to the left wing and scored a superb individual goal.”
After his deadline day links to the Premier League, Watson has immediately proved why Speakman and the Sunderland owners were right to keep him around.
Now though, it’s down to Le Bris to help uncover his talent.
Regis Le Bris knows exactly what to do with Tom Watson at Sunderland
From the numerous clips we’ve seen of Watson in action for the U21s, it’s clear that he’s very much like Jack Clarke.
In the way he attacks and moves on the ball, Watson looks like another Clarke in the making, and after his move to Ipswich Town, there’s certainly a gap in the side.
Although it’s so far been replaced by Romaine Mundle, there needs to be another back-up.
Mundle is the new Clarke and Watson can be the new Mundle; playing no.2 for that left-wing position and getting the occasional minutes in the Championship.
With Watson out of contract in 2026 and clearly attracting interest, now seems like the perfect time for Le Bris to really test him out in the Championship.
