Kristjaan Speakman has finally broken his silence as Sunderland’s first summer transfer was confirmed.

The sporting director has stayed on the down low since Sunderland‘s search for a new manager began in February, with Kyril Louis-Dreyfus‘ statement earlier this month the only bit of communication the fans have received.

The Black Cats owner claimed an appointment would hopefully be made ‘imminently’, but ten days has passed and the club don’t look any closer to bringing in a new head coach.

Despite silence on that front, Sunderland came to life yesterday as they confirmed their first outgoing of the summer.

Alex Bass has joined Notts County on a permanent deal, having made only two senior appearances since moving to Wearside in 2022.

Speakman has responded to Bass’ departure, telling the official club website: “Alex had a successful loan last season and he is eager to continue playing regular football moving forward.

“After discussing multiple options heading into the summer – considering Alex’s future and the continued development of our younger goalkeepers – we agreed this move was the best outcome for all parties. All at SAFC wish Alex the best of luck in the next stage of his career.”

Bass was brought in following Sunderland’s promotion to the Championship and was one of the few underwhelming signings that summer.

The 26-year-old was brought into replace Lee Burge but never really made his way up to the senior team.

Sunderland set to seal first incoming

It now looks like Simon Moore will take his place though – another move that is unlikely to affect what happens on the pitch, but will more likely act as a mentor to the young goalkeepers.

Speakman is clearly eager to get transfer business flowing despite the chaos elsewhere in the club.

However, fans would rather see him putting all his work into bringing in a new manager before looking to transfers.

The Black Cats won’t want to bring in key players until they have their man at the helm, while they will have to persuade the likes of Jack Clarke and Chris Rigg to stay in the meantime.
