‘Not my area’ – Ange Postecoglou on Heung-min Son’s contract situation at Spurs
Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has been speaking to the media at today’s press conference ahead of the match against Bayern Munich.
Heung-min Son is out of contract next summer
The North Londoners face their toughest test of pre-season when they face the Bundesliga giants at the Seoul World Cup Stadium on Saturday.
Tottenham are unbeaten in pre-season so far following victories against Cambridge United, Hearts Queens Park Rangers, Vissel Kobe and Team K-League.
Club captain Heung-min Son was particularly impressive in the last match, scoring a brace against Team K-League in front of his adoring supporters.
Postecoglou was asked about Son’s contract situation at today’s press conference, with the South Korean’s current deal set to expire next summer.
New Bayern boss Vincent Kompany named a relatively strong squad for the trip to South Korea with the likes of Manuel Neuer Joshua Kimmich, Serge Gnabry, Thomas Muller and Eric Dier having all been included
One player who will not take to the pitch this weekend for the Bavarians is Harry Kane, with the former Spurs forward still yet to report back following his involvement with England at Euro 2024.
This is the first of a double header against Bayern, with the German side also facing Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, August 10th.
Son’s contract situation is not Ange’s responsibility
Ange Postecoglou told Football.London: “That’s not really my area. I’ve always, with contract situations, treated them all the same.
“Ben [Davies’ and Sonny are important players at the club and we’ve got a young squad. When it comes to contract matters, that will get sorted out at the appropriate time.”
Tottenham are said to have an option to extend Son’s contract by a further twelve months, which would mean a new expiration date of his contract will be pushed to a week before his 34th birthday (The Athletic).

I would not be surprised to see Tottenham offer Son a new two-year deal to at least see his career out at the club, since he could easily play in the Premier League for the next couple of seasons.
Whether he would want to play elsewhere afterwards will be an interesting situation to see unfold, there is no doubt that Tottenham will offer him a significant ambassadorial role.
