Pat Murphy discusses Brewers at Winter Meetings

Milwaukee Brewers’ Tobias Myers Far From An Overnight Sensation

Tobias Myers of the Milwaukee Brewers is one of Major League Baseball’s best stories in 2024. The 25-year-old rookie is regarded as an overnight sensation – except the Brewers are his sixth organization in seven years.

“Tobias is great,” manager Pat Murphy told Bernie Wilson of The Associated Press after a recent win. “This kid continues to work in between starts and continues to be serious about his unexpected arrival in the big leagues. He himself will tell you he didn’t know he was going to be here. He was hoping, whatever. Since he’s been here, he’s decided that ‘I’m going to listen to these guys.’ ”

“These guys” are Murphy, pitching coach Chris Hook, his assistant Jim Henderson and bullpen coach Charlie Greene. They picked up after Nashville Sounds manager Rick Sweet and pitching coach Jeremy Accardo laid the foundation work for Myers’ rise.

Myers has always had talent but seldom experienced the results he has enjoyed in 2024. He began this season at Triple-A Nashville, making three starts and totaling 18 2/3 innings including two relief outings. He went 1-1 with a 1.45 ERA and 24 strikeouts.

Pretty good for a guy who had a 4.26 ERA in seven previous years in the minors.

With Milwaukee, Myers is 6-3 with a 3.13 ERA in 14 outings, 13 of them starts. That includes three starts where he worked a total of 22 1/3 scoreless innings, giving up nine hits and fanning 17.

The Baltimore Orioles drafted him in the sixth round in 2016 out of Winter Haven (FL) High School. After 10 starts and a collective 4.10 ERA, he was dealt to the Tampa Bay Rays in mid-2017.

Myers made good progress in the Rays’ system, but after the 2021 season was traded to the

Cleveland Guardians. The Rays liked Myers, but jumped at the chance to acquire Junior Caminero, regarded as a top-five prospect and one of the most promising young infielders in the game. Cleveland, loaded with infield prospects, took a chance on Myers – and soon regretted it. He went 1-9 with a 6.00 ERA at Triple-A Columbus and was sold to the San Francisco Giants on July 7, 2022.
