Dodgers pursuing former Gold Glove winner in trade

The Los Angeles Dodgers are reportedly in hot pursuit of reliable depth ahead of the MLB trade deadline on July 30th.

The Dodgers are “in discussions” with the St. Louis Cardinals to acquire utility player Tommy Edman, according to a report from The Athletic’s Fabian Ardaya and Ken Rosenthal.

The risk for the Dodgers is that Edman has yet to play a single game this season due to wrist and ankle injuries. Edman had undergone wrist surgery in the offseason and later hurt his ankle as he tried to work his way back from the initial injury.

The Dodgers have reportedly scouted Edman during his recovery and have factored in his current health status in the trade talks.

Health concerns aside, Edman’s versatility appears to be an ideal fit for what the Dodgers need in their lineup. The 1-time Gold Glove winner can effectively play both middle infield positions and center field when needed.

The 29-year-old has also proven to be dependable at the plate. In nearly 600 career games with the Cardinals, Edman has batted .265 with double-digit home run tallies in each of his four full seasons of work.

Hyun-Seok Jang struck out 8 in 3 scoreless innings in opener in Arizona

The Arizona Complex League Dodgers routed the D-backs 8-1 in Game 1 of the best-of-three league finals on Sunday night at Salt River Fields, and even took a combined no-hitter into the eighth inning in doing so.

Hyun-Seok Jang, the 20-year-old right-hander signed last August out of South Korea, got the ball rolling by striking out eight of his 11 batters faced, pitching three scoreless, hitless innings in his start. He walked one, and another batter reached on an error.

First baseman Easton Shelton, an undrafted free agent who signed with the Dodgers last August, hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Second baseman Nicolas Perez, drafted in the 15th round in 2022, hit a solo shot in the sixth.

The D-backs didn’t have a hit until a leadoff triple in the top of the eighth.

Game 2 is Monday night at 6 p.m. at Camelback Ranch.

Player of the day

Griffin Lockwood-Powell, the Tulsa catcher/first baseman who was at designated hitter on Sunday, had five hits in the Drillers’ blowout win in Frisco.

Five hits is a career high for Lockwood-Powell, whose previous best was four hits for Great Lakes last August 18.

Triple-A Oklahoma City

Down two runs with two outs in the ninth inning, Oklahoma City scored three runs to beat the Tacoma Rainiers (Mariners). Brendon Davis tied the game with a two-run double, then Chris Okey singled home Davis with the game-winner.

Ben Casparius pitched five scoreless innings with six strikeouts in his start, allowing only a single and two walks.

Double-A Tulsa

A number of Drillers could have been named player of the day for shining in Tulsa’s rout of the Frisco RoughRiders (Rangers).

Damon Keith and Jose Ramos each homered and doubled. Keith had four hits and scored four runs. Ramos drove in four and scored three.

Brandon Lewis had three hits and drove in three, including a home run. Dalton Rushing hit his third home run of his last five games.
