Enzo Maresca has cast doubt over Wilfred Ndidi’s injury optimism and suggested his comeback won’t be as soon as the Nigerian hopes.

The Leicester City midfielder made a surprise statement on Monday night as he told Sky Sports he would be back playing again in a couple of weeks, despite only having surgery a fortnight ago. An early February return would have been way ahead of the initial schedule set out by Maresca, who said Ndidi could potentially be out until early April.

Reacting to Ndidi’s comment, Maresca has dampened the good news, and said he is not expecting to have him available that soon. Asked about the “couple of weeks” timeframe that Ndidi set out, the City boss said: “Hopefully! But I don’t think so. Hopefully he can be back in two weeks but I don’t think so.”

Ndidi was one of five senior players missing for City during Monday night’s draw with Ipswich, with Abdul Fatawu another, the winger serving the first of his three-game suspension for a red card at Coventry. The ban covers FA Cup matches, so this weekend’s fourth-round tie against Birmingham will count towards his three games
