Newcastle United have been linked with a potential summer swoop for Sunderland starlet Chris Rigg.

Newcastle United have once again been linked with Sunderland sensation Rigg.

It’s been reported that Newcastle United scouted Rigg in action against QPR in the Championship on Saturday, as Sunderland played out a 0-0 draw.

The 16-year-old Hebburn-born midfielder has now made 13 appearances in the Championship this season, with one goal to his name.

Chris Rigg career so far

Rigg, Sunderland’s youngest-ever outfield player, joined the club’s youth academy when he was still in primary school.

In less than 10 years he’s gone from starting out in the academy to starting for the first-team, making his first-team debut under Tony Mowbray last season.

Rigg now has two goals in 17 total first-team outings for the Black Cats; his goal against Crewe Alexandra in the FA Cup earlier this season made him the youngest-ever scorer in the competition.

Newcastle United have been linked with Rigg on and off for the past year or so, with senior scout Mick Tait said to have watched Rigg in action against QPR.

Other teams reportedly interested in Rigg include Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, and Bayern Munich.

What is Chris Rigg’s current contract situation

Rigg, being only 16 years old, is still on a scholarship deal at the Stadium of Light.

But he turns 17 in June and it’s been reported that there’s an agreement in place for Rigg to sign professional terms with Sunderland.

Though the terms of said deal are yet to be revealed, and whether it’s a concrete agreement remains to be seen.
