Cowboys Are Trying Out Veteran RB As Slot Receiver

The Dallas Cowboys didn’t do much of anything to upgrade their wide receiver room around CeeDee Lamb this offseason and instead opted to trust who they already had in-house to pick up the slack and mitigate the loss of Michael Gallup in free agency.
There’s plenty of talent on the roster to get it done, and one unexpected interesting name could be throwing his hat into the ring as a potential slot receiver.
According to Around The NFL, the Cowboys are trying out running back Deuce Vaughn as a slot receiver, and Vaughn said “It was one of those things that we had kind of talked about at the end of the season last year,” while adding “talking with [offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer] just a little bit about getting with the slot…just learning a little bit more about it.
Vaughn didn’t see the field much as a rookie in 2023 and had just 23 carries for 40 yards and seven catches on seven targets for another 40 yards.
The 5’6″ Vaughn could add explosiveness to this offense that nobody else on the roster is capable of providing, and the team doesn’t have a clear slot receiver on the depth chart who would block Vaughn from seeing heavy snaps at the position.
Jalen Tolbert is currently the most obvious choice to be the No. 3 receiver after posting 22 catches for 268 yards and two touchdowns.
The Cowboys signed Ezekiel Elliott back to the team to replace Tony Pollard in the backfield, and he will likely see the bulk of the carries alongside Rico Dowdle, leaving Vaughn once again relegated to third-string duty.
