Humphrey Ker has penned a heartfelt message to the eight players departing Wrexham upon the expiry of their contracts this summer.

Wrexham achieved promotion back to League One for the first time since 2005 and although the success deserves all the praise, it does come with its drawbacks.

The Reds are forced into waving goodbye to some of their long-serving players who have helped them on their journeys.

Yesterday, Wrexham announced their released/retained list. They revealed eight players would be leaving upon the expiry of their contracts, including captain Luke Young, Ben Tozer, Callum McFadzean, Rob Lainton, Aaron Hayden, Jordan Tunnicliffe, Owen Cushion and Dan Davies.

Having played pivotal roles in their rise from the National League, Young, Tozer and Lainton are the three departures that have upset supporters the most.

Young and Tozer have been pictured enjoying themselves in Las Vegas with their Wrexham teammates to cap off their illustrious time in Wales, as support streamed in for them.

Humphrey Ker pens emotional message to departing Wrexham players

Humphrey Ker, Wrexham’s executive director and the man who ultimately set Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds on the path towards buying the Welsh club, has seen some unbelievable highs.

But having watched several players flourish on their journey to League One, it was tough waving goodbye to some of their long-serving stars.

After announcing eight players would depart the club this summer, Ker took to Instagram to pen a heartfelt message, which showed his support and gratitude to those who gave everything for the badge.

Tozer displayed at Wrexham with his iconic long throw and warrior-like displays while Young’s ability to pull the strings and lead from the front were invaluable to Wrexham’s rise.

The pair will leave this summer having made 377 appearances for the club and deserve their name etched in Wrexham folklore.

What’s next for departing Wrexham players?

While they weren’t deemed good enough for League One, Tozer and Young should have no issues signing for most League Two clubs.

The pair boast unbelievable experience and played their fair share of games under Phil Parkinson this term.

Young made 25 appearances in the fourth tier and even starred in their final two wins over Crewe Alexandra and Stockport County.

Those performances from the 31-year-old however, should lead to a fourth-tier side snapping him up immediately having shown his class in Wrexham’s midfield.

Goalkeeper Lainton also deserves his flowers for placing third in the all-time clean sheets list with 63 and for making that stunning save against Chesterfield in the National League.

Although Lainton has been unfortunate with injuries, he is good enough to play in League Two. It just depends on whether he can stay fit.
