Southampton could battle Hull City for Manchester City prospect
Southampton are admirers of Manchester City striker Liam Delap, according to reporter Jack Rosser on X.
Southampton are preparing for life in the Premier League following their Championship play-off final win over Leeds United at Wembley. They have a big summer ahead as they look to bolster their ranks and gear up for their return to the top flight.
Delap, 21, has emerged on the radar of Russell Martin’s side following an impressive loan spell at Hull City in the second tier in this past campaign. The Tigers are keen to bring him back in some capacity in the upcoming transfer window, as per a report by HullLive, but it remains to be seen whether that would be possible.
In this latest update regarding his future by journalist Rosser on X, he is on the Saints’ list of targets. He scored eight goals in 32 games during his stint at the MKM Stadium.
Southampton eye Hull City target
Southampton could see Delap as someone to add more competition and depth to their attacking department.
He has a lot of potential and could be a useful player down the line for the Saints.
However, his chances of breaking into their first-team in the top flight and he is unproven at the top level.
Delap impressed at Hull City last term but was injured for a large chunk of the campaign and would benefit from one more year in the second tier.
Delap has been with Manchester City since joining them from Derby County in 2019 and he has played six times for Pep Guardiola’s side, chipping in with a single goal.
He had loan spells at Stoke City and Preston North End before his switch to Hull City but struggled in front of goal for the second tier pair, finding the net on a combined four occasions.
What next for striker?
Manchester City have a big decision to make on what to do next with Delap.
He is unlikely to get into their starting XI ahead of Erling Haaland so they need to weigh up whether to loan him out again or sell him on a permanent basis.
