White Sox Set Starting Pitchers for Opening Series vs. Tigers
The Chicago White Sox still have several roster decisions to make as Spring Training winds down, but the starting rotation is starting to come together. Garrett Crochet will get the ball on Opening Day against the Detroit Tigers, a surprising move considering it’ll be his first MLB start. Manager Pedro Grifol announced Wednesday that Michael Soroka will pitch the Sox’ second game of the season and Erick Fedde will toss the series finale against the Tigers.
Garrett Crochet: 2024 White Sox Opening Day Starter
Crochet took the fast track to the big leagues and has only worked out of the bullpen to date. Tommy John surgery and the subsequent recovery kept Crochet sidelined for all of 2022 and most of 2023, but the left-hander’s desire to start never waned.
Needing to prove himself in Spring Training, Crochet impressed the White Sox brass with a spotless ERA in nine innings across four outings. He harnessed his command by allowing no walks and striking out 12 batters, two of which came during an impressive showing against the Los Angeles Dodgers’ start-studded lineup on Feb. 27.
Michael Soroka
Soroka was one of five players to join the White Sox in an offseason trade that sent Aaron Bummer to the Atlanta Braves. Once an Opening Day starter for his former team, the right-hander battled injuries and underperformance after earning an All-Star nod in 2019.
