CJ Stroud Defends Controversial Ohio State Transfer Quarterback “That Was His Thing”

NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year and former Ohio State star quarterback CJ Stroud isn’t particularly outspoken about the press and making headlines. In a way, he just shows up, does his job, and goes home. In fact, sometimes, some believe he appears not to care or not be invested in everything he does because of his calm and quiet demeanor.

On Wednesday, he appeared to go against that. In an interview with reporters following the Ohio State NFL Pro Day, Stroud had some strong but very honest words about the departure of former Buckeyes starting quarterback Kyle McCord.

Kyle McCord has received a lot of backlash following his departure from OSU. Some pointed to him fearing he would be unable to lead the Buckeyes past Michigan, perhaps the moment being too big in Colombus or even fearing a quarterback competition that would have happened had he stayed as reasons for his decision to leave for his final year of eligibility.

Regardless of why he ended up leaving, CJ Stroud said he talked with McCord and supported him in his decision. He shared the following:

“I hit him up and we had a couple conversations and everything made sense on what he was thinking…Sometimes, man, you outgrown places. I think that was his thing. He just outgrew what was going on here and wanted to go see other things. And sometimes that’s what you need to do, and that’s God’s plan for his life.”

Kyle McCord was Stroud’s backup in his final year at Ohio State. McCord decided to enter the transfer portal early in the window, with some believing he would be looking to sign with a team such as Alabama, Oklahoma, or even rival Michigan. However, he ended up going to Syracuse, a team that has only finished with a winning record once in the last decade.
