Josh Doig to quash Rangers links as Serie A giants open talks and Gers look elsewhere

Josh Doig is a name which many Rangers fans put on the ‘ones that got away’ list.

The young Scotland full-back, 22, has been routinely linked with a move to Rangers ever since breaking through at Hibs as a teenager.

Former Ibrox assistant Gary McAllister has previously confirmed the club’s interest in Doig, which stretches back to the time of Steven Gerrard.

Linked with a move to Rangers in January, the Gers were reportedly monitoring the then Verona left-back amid exit links surrounding Ridvan Yilmaz.

After Sassuolo nicked in front of Marseille to sign Josh Doig to the tune of £5m, any suggestion of Rangers moving was immediately short-lived.

Fast forward six months and Josh Doig is reportedly on the move again after the Italians suffered relegation.

Doig linked to fresh transfer

According to reports in the Hibs Observer, Josh Doig is a legitimate transfer target for one of Italy’s biggest clubs.

Scottish players moving to the Italian game is very much ‘che figata’ at present with the success stories of Aaron Hickey and Lewis Ferguson well documented.

And keeping with that theme AS Roma are said to be monitoring the situation with the Sassuolo left-back this summer.

With legendary Roma midfielder Daniele de Rossi taking over from Jose Mourinho in January the Scottish left-back is said to have made an impression in the Italian capital.

Sassuolo are expected to have a ‘fire sale’ as a result of their demotion with Josh Doig one of the names on the list.

It means the kid could be about to make a stunning switch to AS Roma and Rangers fans will lament a failure to strike a deal with Hibs all those years ago.

Rangers left-back attentions elsewhere

Needless to say that if the Scottish youngster moves to AS Roma, any notion he could come to Rangers would be killed stone dead.

Not that we imagine there will be anyone at Ibrox too upset.

Whilst Rangers are going through a period of substantial upheaval in the left-back position, the Gers’ eyes are very much fixed on alternative options.

The future of Galatasaray-linked Ridvan Yilmaz remains uncertain, whilst Borna Barisic has reportedly agreed a move to Turkish football.

As a result, Rangers have brought in 20-year-old Brazilian left-back Jefte.

The out-of-contract Fluminense youth product spent last season on loan with APOEL and has been a high-profile target since January.
