Lightning acquire veteran defenseman Matt Dumba at NHL trade deadline
TAMPA, Fla. – The Lightning upgraded their blue line in the 11th hour before Friday’s 3 p.m. trade deadline, acquiring veteran right-shot defenseman Matt Dumba from the Coyotes. Tampa Bay also received a seventh-round pick in 2025 in the deal, sending a fifth-round selection in 2027 to Arizona. Dumba, a 29-year-old veteran of 11 NHL seasons, has four goals and 10 points in 58 games for the Coyotes, who signed him to a one-year deal at a $3.9 million cap hit. He can become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
The Lightning were looking for defense help, especially after left-shot defenseman Mikhail Sergachev went down with a broken left leg that will likely sideline him for at least the remainder of the regular season. It was the second deal the Lightning made in the 24 hours before the deadline. Thursday night, they acquired speedy goal-scoring left wing Anthony Duclair from San Jose in a deal that sent this year’s third-round pick and promising right-shot defenseman Jack Thompson to the Sharks. MISS-A-STEP: 67’s start ‘flat’, losing to Steelheads, who could be first-round playoff opponent
The 67’s and Steelheads were tied in the standings with 73 points entering the day.
There’s a list of reasons why the Ottawa 67’s slipped to sixth in the OHL’s Eastern Conference on Sunday instead of keeping pace with the big boys just ahead of them at the top of the standings
It includes, in no particular order, an inadequate compete level, a lack of discipline and a defensive zone error by their best player.
“I just made a mistake going (behind) the net,” said Luca Pinelli, the 67’s captain, inspirational leader and leading (43 goals, 75 points) scorer. “Stuff like that happens. I just tried to bounce back after that.”
So did his team, but without success.
Trailing 2-1 after one period, the 67’s fell behind by a couple when Pinelli was stripped of the puck by Mississauga Steelheads winger Mason Zebeski, who took it out front and banged in his second goal of the game and 20th of the season nine minutes into the second period.
