Derby County news as Paul Warne speaks out following the Rams’ 1-1 home draw with Shrewsbury Town

Derby County head coach Paul Warne has admitted that he got his first-half tactics wrong in the Rams’ 1-1 League One draw with Shrewsbury Town at Pride Park.

Aaron Pierre’s 87th-minute equaliser denied Derby a vital three points in their race for promotion to the Championship. Max Bird had put the Rams ahead in the second half in a game that lacked much goal action.

The game took some time to come to life after a slow and quiet opening 45 minutes. The home side did look better in the second-half after Warne switched to a back four and introduced Tom Barkhuizen.

And after the frustrating 1-1 draw, the Derby boss held his hands up for choosing the wrong formation. “First-half is my fault, I picked the wrong shape for the game,” he said.

“I thought with Cash [Eiran Cashin] missing, having the three would give us some solidity and would enable [Louie] Sibley and [Joe] Ward to be higher up the pitch but it didn’t really happen. We didn’t really get out. We looked edgy.

“In fairness to Shrewsbury, everything they got, we gave to them with our sloppiness. We changed the system after 35 minutes, I should have changed it earlier really.

“Obviously I changed Ward for Barkhuizen at half-time and we looked a lot more like the team we are. I thought we created some decent opportunities but not amazing.

“We get the lead then it’s all about getting the second goal. We didn’t play with enough personality to create enough chances to get the second goal. As you see with all the results today in League One, there’s some random ones.

“That’s my regret, that we didn’t play with enough personality and freedom when we were leading. It looked like we played with a little bit of fear, which you can never get success from.”
