Coventry City boss explains backroom reshuffle as club moves ‘towards elite’

Coventry City pre-season news from CoventryLive as Mark Robins explains his thinking behind bringing in two new coaches to replace Dennis Lawrence

Mark Robins has explained his two for one approach to his coaching team at Coventry City this summer as he moves “towards elite” at the Championship club.

The Sky Blues appointed former favourite George Boateng and Wolves’ individual coaching specialist Rhys Carr earlier this month following the departure of Dennis Lawrence to Minnesota United in April. Their arrivals coincided with assistant manager Adi Viveash’s sudden and shock exit, prompting questions over whether the in-coming pair were brought in to cover his loss as well.

But the club have since advertised for a new Head Coach in a newly created role that will see the successful applicant take on many of the responsibilities previously taken care of by Viveash.

Explaining his thinking behind the backroom reshuffle, Robins told CoventryLive: “In terms of the two lads who have come in, during the interview process I was building in my head what it would look like.

“We want to try to give all the players as much as we possibly can do to give them the opportunity to be the best that they can. That’s the aim and clearly we’re still way away from other clubs in the Championship (in terms of backroom personnel) but we’re moving in a positive way.

“We are moving towards elite. An elite environment is what we’re after and with a performance director, Claire-Marie (Roberts), coming in, she’s really good. She’s really thoughtful, innovative and got some really good ideas but really calm and considered with what she says and does, so that’s a big help.

“We are trying to move towards an elite environment, changing things and operating in a different way and it is heading in that direction.”

Asked about Boateng and Carr’s remits, the manager said: “They have got specific roles. But we have and will have more hands to help and that the players get all the attention they need, maybe some one to one stuff.

“They are finding their feet, but have done it really quickly to be honest with you. They are great lads. George is still really humble and got loads to offer and I am happy with the way things are shaping up so far.”
