Henderson talks continue | Football News | Sky Sports

Sunderland told they have an ‘unbelievable’ player who can become better than Jordan Henderson

Sunderland have some of the most exciting youngsters in the Championship this season.

The EFL has produced some huge talent over the years, with five of England’s starting line-up in the Euro 2024 final starting their career in the lower division

Sunderland have produced some of those talents themselves, having just sold Jack Clarke to Ipswich Town for £15m.

However, it isn’t the winger that is the most exciting player to walk through the doors at the Academy of Light recently.

Sunderland told they have an 'unbelievable' player who can become better than Jordan Henderson

Chris Rigg looks to have established himself as a regular under Regis Le Bris, having put on some ‘outrageous’ performances so far.

The 17-year-old caught the eye once again in their win over Portsmouth, with the Sunderland Echo gifting him an 8 rating yesterday.

Chris Rigg told he has world class potential

Rigg has been tipped for big things after being linked with some of Europe’s biggest clubs this summer, but journalist Michael Graham has made one huge claim regarding his potential.

Graham wrote on X: “Chris Rigg by the way… utterly unbelievable that Sunderland have Jobe Bellingham and he’s the club’s SECOND best teenage central midfield prospect. Huge talent. Best I’ve ever seen come through at #SAFC and we’ve produced a Premier League and Champions League winning captain.”

Why Jordan Henderson is one of Sunderland's greatest sons

When asked if his ceiling is ‘up there’ with Jordan Henderson, Graham replied: “I think Rigg’s ceiling is higher. A lot higher.”

He then went onto claim that Henderson was ‘never world class’ but Rigg will be.

So was Henderson ever world class?

Sunderland fans absolutely love Rigg and are fully aware of his talent, while it surely won’t be long before the rest of English football fans will be aware of the young prodigy.

There is no denying that he is going to the very top given how good he looks now at only 17 years old. The teenager would undoubtedly get into a number of Premier League midfield’s right now.

As for him becoming world class, it is incredibly hard to predict. Rigg still has a long way to go and has plenty of decisions to be made before he hits his prime and there are plenty of players who look to be on that path but never make it.

He is certainly capable of being just as good as Henderson, though also claiming that the former Liverpool captain wasn’t world class is a little unfair.

The 34-year-old captained the Reds to Premier League, FA Cup, two League Cups, the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and the Club World Cup.

He was one of the best midfielders in the world at one point and has always been very underrated. While he certainly dipped off in recent years, his importance to Liverpool’s success can’t be denied.
