Everyone said the same thing about brutal call during Rangers-Tigers game

The Texas Rangers on Monday hosted the Detroit Tigers for the opener of a three-game series at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

With the score tied 1-1, Rangers outfielder Leody Tavares led off the bottom of the 7th inning against Tigers reliever Beau Brieske. Tavares worked a full count and kept his at-bat alive by fouling off several close pitches.

Brieske’s 10th pitch of the at-bat, which appeared to be well below the zone, was called a strike by home plate umpire Tom Hanahan. Tavares, the home fans, and even Rangers broadcast announcer Dave Raymond couldn’t believe the call.

All three outs in the half-inning were made via a called third strike. The Tigers scored a run in the 8th and shut out the Rangers the rest of the way for a 2-1 win.

The bad call had a few fans thinking Hernandez was still behind the plate calling balls and strikes.

Red Sox 3B coach played role in ending Boston’s 2011 postseason hopes

Kyle Hudson played in just 14 Major League Baseball games, but he played a pivotal role in one of the Boston Red Sox’ notorious losses during the final regular-season game of 2011.

Kyle Hudson

Hudson, now Boston’s third base coach, was playing for the Orioles after being recalled by Baltimore as part of its September call-ups. On Sept. 28, 2011 with the Red Sox one out away from the postseason and up by a run with Jonathan Papelbon on the mound, Chris Davis doubled to right field to put the tying run in scoring position. The Orioles pinch-ran Hudson for Davis.

Nolan Reimold hit a ground-rule double, which scored Hudson from second, to tie the game. The Orioles eventually went on to win and ended Boston’s postseason hopes.

“I remember a lot about that night,” Hudson said during his appearance on MassLive’s “Fenway Rundown” podcast on Monday. “I remember that I didn’t do much at all. … Nolan Reimold hit a ground-rule double where I scored the tying run. So I didn’t even really have to do anything. I could have walked to home plate if I needed to.

“… It was a crazy night. There was a rain delay and we were watching other games,” he later added. “We knew what was at stake and we were kind of using that as as our World Series, in a sense, because we knew if we beat the Red Sox there was gonna be a chance that they weren’t gonna make the playoffs and so we were trying everything we could to do that.”
