Sheffield Wednesday have trump card to play over Sunderland and Leeds United in race for Burnley player
With the summer transfer window now on the horizon, many clubs will be making plans for their business ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
That, of course, means players are about to be on the move, and for some, those switches may be set to come not long after their last change in team.
One such player who may well find themselves in that position over the coming months is Leeds United’s Ian Poveda.
The winger’s last move only came in January this year, when he joined Sheffield Wednesday on a loan deal until the end of the season.
While he was hampered by injury during that spell at Hillsborough, Poveda still impressed during the ten appearances he made for the Owls.
His contributions helped the club to pull off a great escape to avoid relegation from the Championship to League One.
As a result, it now seems as though that is attracting plenty of interest from elsewhere ahead of the summer transfer window.
Clubs racing to sign Ian Poveda
As things stand, Poveda’s contract with parent club Leeds is set to come to an end this summer.
That, of course, means he looks set to become a free agent in the coming months, although he is seemingly unlikely to be short of offers from elsewhere.
It has already been reported that Sheffield Wednesday are keen to re-sign the 24-year-old on a permanent basis.
Meanwhile, relegation threatened Premier League duo Burnley and Luton Town, as well as another Championship side in the form of Sunderland, have also been credited with an interest in Poveda.
Given his previous connection with Sheffield Wednesday, there may be some sense that they have some advantage over their rivals in the race to sign the winger.
However, there is an argument that Burnley may also have a trump card they can play to convince Poveda to make Turf Moor his next destination, if he does indeed leave Leeds United this summer.
Sheffield Wednesday can offer Ian Poveda an exciting reunion
It should be remembered, of course, that prior to making the move to Leeds in January 2020, Poveda had been on the books of Manchester City.
The Colombian international spent four years on the books at The Etihad, and for the first three of those seasons, he was there alongside a certain Vincent Kompany.
Having departed City as a legend in the summer of 2019 having won ten major titles with the club, Kompany has since made his way into management.
That has, of course, seen him take over at Burnley, arriving at the club at the start of last season, and it may now give them some extra hope of securing the signing of Poveda.
Since he was at Manchester City at the same time as a figure such as Kompany, the chance to link up with him again could well be appealing for the winger.
