Leeds United ace Diego Llorente is the reason why his move to Roma didn’t come to fruition, according to Fran Campos Vasquez.

The Spanish journalist reported on 9 July through 101 Deportes Sevilla that Llorente snubbed Roma’s offer to join Real Betis.

Although the 30-year-old was comfortable in Italy, he was convinced to join Betis after hearing Manuel Pellegrini’s project plans.

Change has been aplenty at Elland Road this season with a plethora of players both departing and joining.

Archie Gray is obviously the biggest name to have left the club this summer following his move to Tottenham but Charlie Cresswell has also left, while Marc Roca’s permanent exit has been completed.

The permanent addition of Joe Rodon has no doubt improved their chances of promotion tenfold, but, if the West Yorkshire club doesn’t manage to get some backup options into the squad for their defence, they could find themselves in a bit of a pickle.

In light of this, some fans might have wanted to keep former Real Madrid man Llorente around even just as a stop-gap until a proper replacement can be found.

However, since he has been away from the club for the last 18 months, the £2.5million that Leeds are set to receive [Marca, 8 July, page 18] could go towards their next addition.
