McTominay Set to Join Aston Villa transfers Unai Emery backed to complete this summer as Man Utd Overrated Him

Aston Villa have been linked with a host of players in what has been an already busy summer transfer window

Aston Villa have signed six players this summer, have welcomed back two more and are on the verge of adding another to their ranks in what has been a busy transfer window indeed – but Unai Emery, Monchi and Villa’s recruitment thinktank are unlikely to be done just yet.

Having welcomed back Ross Barkley, Jaden Philogene and Cameron Archer, as well as Kosta Nedeljkovic for the first time, Villa have also signed up Ian Maatsen, Enzo Barrenechea and Samuel Iling-Junior from Juventus and Lewis Dobbin from Everton. Amadou Onana is due to arrive imminently from the same club.

With Moussa Diaby also set to leave in the near future, Villa are likely to have funds and room to manoeuvre if they wished to make further additions. At Betfair, they’ve priced up the players who are likely to be on the move this summer and Villa’s respective prices to be their next club in those various markets.

The Chelsea midfielder, who has been their captain, is well liked by Emery and has only a single year left on his Blues contract. Villa would have appeared to be one of the few sides, along with Tottenham, who might’ve exploited that situation – and for Chelsea it would’ve meant a pure profit sale. That said, Villa have signed Barrenechea, Barkley and have Onana on the way – they’re well stocked in midfield.

Grealish is likely to be linked with a return to Villa for years to come. Three years on from his £100m move, having helped Villa become mid-table Premier League rather than mid-table Championship, Grealish has won the lot with Manchester City. Injuries and a struggle for form cost him a Euro 2024 spot, though, and it’s left a question mark on his long-term future at the Etihad Stadium. Would he fit in at Villa now? It’d be hugely expensive, too.

Playmaker McTominay has proven to be a bit of an unsung hero at Manchester United in recent years and has been key for Scotland at international level in helping them to qualify for the Euros. Fulham, who have money and wish to replace Joao Palhinha, have already seen a bid rejected this summer and West Ham have a longstanding interest, too. As already mentioned, though, Villa have plenty of midfield options currently.
