Red Sox get back left-handed pitcher they lost to White Sox in Rule 5 Draft
BOSTON — Prospect Shane Drohan is back with the Red Sox six months after they lost him to the White Sox in the Rule 5 Draft.
Drohan is not part of Boston’s 40-man roster. He likely will be sent to Triple-A Worcester but that has yet to be decided. The Red Sox also have not yet decided whether they will use Drohan as a starter or reliever, a club official said.
Chicago returned the 25-year-old left-handed pitcher to Boston on Wednesday after he cleared waivers. The White Sox activated Drohan from the 60-day injured list Sunday, then designated him for assignment instead of reinstating him.
He would have needed to remain on the White Sox’ active 26-man roster for the remainder of the 2024 season for them to keep him in the organization.
Drohan underwent shoulder surgery Feb. 21. Chicago sent him on a rehab assignment May 3. With the rehab assignment recently expiring, the White Sox needed to make a decision on whether or not to keep him.
He struggled in eight rehab appearances, which all came out of the bullpen. He allowed 10 runs (nine earned runs), nine hits and eight walks while striking out 15 in 9 ⅓ innings.
Drohan, who Boston drafted in the fifth round out of Florida State in 2020, showed potential in 2023 when he posted a 1.32 ERA in six starts at Double-A Portland to begin the season. But he struggled after a promotion to Triple-A Worcester, recording a 6.47 ERA in 21 outings (19 starts).
He allowed four runs in 4 innings (five outings) at Triple-A Charlotte this year.
