Impressive statistic shows Phil Parkinson what his Wrexham transfer priority must be
Wrexham are looking to strengthen their squad this summer and an emerging statistic shows where Phil Parkinson’s priorities must lie.
Wrexham will play League One football for the first time since 2005 following promotion and Ryan Reynolds has claimed he will go broke to achieve three consecutive promotions.
It points towards the Reds being incredibly active in the transfer market and flexing their financial muscles to poach talent from some of their rivals.
Links towards Notts County striker Macaulay Langstaff and “electric” forward Benji Magee have been drawn as Phil Parkinson aims to bolster his squad with firepower.
Wrexham did score 89 goals in League Two this term, placing them only behind Mansfield Town and Stockport County, but reinforcements will be required to make a successful step up.
Likewise, Parkinson will need to look at reinforcements defensively and one target should be his priority.
Why Wrexham should prioritise Arthur Okonkwo signing
Arthur Okonkwo formed the bedrock of Wrexham’s promotion challenge.
The 22-year-old, who experienced spells at Crewe Alexandra and Austrian side Sturm Graz, found a home in Wales after arriving on loan from Arsenal last summer.
Okonkwo’s impressive displays in between the sticks saw him included in the League Two Team of the Season while attracting interest from several clubs.
The Englishman is out of contract this summer, so Wrexham could sign him on a free transfer, with executive director Humphrey Ker claiming he’s ‘desperate’ to get a deal done.
As several Championship sides and teams abroad have shown interest, capturing Okonkwo won’t be simple, although one statistic shows why he should be a priority.
What Phil Parkinson has said about Arthur Okonkwo
Parkinson is a big fan of Okonwko and has claimed he has “big potential”.
Speaking last year, the Wrexham boss said: “We know he has got real potential.
“He came to us without much football behind him in pre-season but he has fitted in well with the lads and has settled into the area, he has rented an apartment. He has been an important signing for us so far and I think he is going to get better.”
If Wrexham can complete the signing of Okonkwo and beat off interest from elsewhere, it could set the tone for their summer business.
A goalkeeper is a real priority for Wrexham as the Reds will no doubt face more quality in attack and having a top-class shot stopper will help massively.
