“Very good replacement” – Pundit backs Ipswich Town, Rob Edwards swoop if Kieran McKenna leaves

Edwards has been linked as a potential Kieran McKenna replacement if the Northern Irishman departs Portman Road

Ipswich and Luton face opposite directions this summer: one promoted, the other relegated.

Uncertainty looms for Ipswich amid rumors of manager McKenna’s potential departure.

Rob Edwards may replace McKenna, bringing a different style to the team but offering experience.

Ipswich Town and Luton Town are heading in polar opposite directions this summer.

Rob Edwards for Luton Town

The Tractor Boys were able to emulate the Hatters’ success of twelve months ago by producing an underdog story as they regained Premier League status for the first time since the 2001/02 campaign.

And although they gained plenty of plaudits and admiration for their valiant efforts, the Kenilworth Road outfit will be returning to the Championship after a solitary season in the top flight, as their relegation was mathematically confirmed on the final day of the season after a 4-2 home defeat by Fulham.

Despite the switching of positions between the two in the pyramid this summer, that hasn’t stopped links between Rob Edwards and a potential move to Portman Road.

That’s because of the managerial uncertainty which is ongoing in Suffolk, as a result of the spectacular job Kieran McKenna has done throughout his time in charge.

After accumulating 194 points and 193 goals over two seasons, achieving back-to-back promotions, McKenna has most recently been linked with the vacancy at Brighton and Hove Albion after Roberto De Zerbi’s departure, alongside the main job at Manchester United and Chelsea, amid claims that they would have to cough up £6m in compensation funds to prize him away from Portman Road.

Therefore, on Sunday afternoon, a report emerged from talkSPORT linking Edwards with a move to Ipswich should McKenna depart.

FLW have since spoken to former England defender Carlton Palmer for his verdict on the situation, as the pundit believes the 41-year-old would be a good replacement.

Rob Edwards for Luton Town

“Ipswich Town are keeping tabs on Luton boss Rob Edwards, should Kieran McKenna depart,” he began. “They’re looking at Edwards as a potential replacement.”

“I’m a big fan of Rob Edwards, I think he’s done a magnificent job at Luton. I think it’s very difficult when you get promoted and you’re in that position of not having the money to go out and spend, but he’s made it a very competitive season. They weren’t blown away,” Palmer continued.
