Shocking New York Giants Player Listed As Cut/Trade Candidate
Just like every NFL season, the New York Giants and other teams make shocking releases and trades. A season ago, the Giants decided to trade for tight end Darren Waller from the Las Vegas Raiders and the Giants are expecting him to retire from the NFL.
Waller only played for the New York Giants for one season. That failure did not stop general manager Joe Schoen from making more trades. He traded for outside linebacker Brian Burns from the Carolina Panthers this offseason and gave them a second-round pick in return.
New York Giants Wide Receiver Darius Slayton Named a Cut/Trade Candidate By CBS Sports
Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports has Giants wide receiver Darius Slayton listed as a cut/trade candidate before the start of the 2024 NFL season. The reason he gave for that is as follows:
“Skipping voluntary workouts in an apparent bid for a new contract, Slayton has quietly topped 700 receiving yards in four of five NFL seasons. But with first-round pick Malik Nabers onboard, he’s also expendable. Cutting or trading him would save the Giants anywhere from $3.8 million to $6.4 million.”
Slayton will be a free agent at the end of the season. It isn’t like he has a hefty contract at the moment. Darius Slayton was a fifth-round pick for the New York Giants in 2019 out of Auburn. He has been the leading receiver for the Giants in the last four out of five seasons.
Darius Slayton is projected to be on the first unit along with Malik Nabers and Wan’Dale Robinson. Jalin Hyatt is not ready to be with the first unit yet. It would be silly for the Giants to trade or cut him before the season starts. We have seen crazier things happen in the NFL.
Last season, he caught 50 passes for 770 yards receiving and four touchdowns. Slayton averaged 15.4 yards per catch and also was targeted 79 times. He is going to be the perfect number two wide receiver in this offense behind Malik Nabers.
There would no doubt be a market for him if Slayton was released or traded by the New York Giants. They won’t cut him, but a trade mid-season, if the Giants are not in the playoff race, would be a more likely option for this franchise
