Shrewsbury Town win race to sign free transfer from League Two

Shrewsbury Town have won the race for Cheltenham Town forward George Lloyd, as per Jon Palmer.

Shrewsbury Town are gearing up for another League One campaign. The Salop finished 19th in the third tier last time around, only narrowly surviving the drop.

Cheltenham Town weren’t as fortunate. They finished two places below Shrewsbury Town and will be playing League Two football next season.

Lloyd, 24, made 27 league appearances last season for the Robins. He scored twice and assisted a further three featuring majorly at centre forward.

He spent a year on loan at Grimsby Town the season before and eight goal contributions in 21 league outings remains his best season to date.

Lloyd has been linked with a move away this summer. Clubs in both League One and Two were said to be after him. And it has now been claimed Shrewsbury Town have won this race.

Lloyd is set to join the Salop on a free transfer once his contract expires in Gloucestershire later this month.

A period of transition

Cheltenham Town have lost a number of figures who featured heavily for them last season, as well as their manager.

Michael Flynn is now in charge and he is tasked with guiding the club through this period of uncertainty this summer.

The club will be hopeful of one day returning to League One, but the focus has to be on stabilising next season and ensuring they don’t fall deep in the fourth tier.

Flynn will have to work on a budget and he will have to be shrewd in the transfer window to adequately rebuild his Robins side. However, he has experience in the league and that should stand him in a good position to know what is needed to compete.

What can he bring?

Lloyd, 24, is still only young. But, he has a fair few seasons of senior football under his belt now ranging from the National League North to League One.

182 senior appearances is impressive across all competitions, but whilst he still has room to grow the one thing that he needs to improve on is his goal output.

Shrewsbury Town are a side who will want to kick up the third tier and if Lloyd wants to make his mark he will need to show consistently that he is capable of delivering.
