Tottenham announce ‘agreement reached’ for defender’s exit

Tottenham Hotspur academy player Brooklyn Lyons-Foster has left the club to join HJK Helsinki in a permanent transfer, the club has today confirmed.

Lyons-Foster is a product of the Tottenham Hotspur academy, having developed through the youth system with the Lilywhites. He moved up to the Under-23 squad in 2019 and, now 23 years old, has been the captain for the development side this season.

The centre-back made 14 appearances for the Under-23s this season, registering one assist (Transfermarkt).

He never made a first-team appearance for Tottenham, but did feature on the bench in the 2021/22 campaign for the Europa Conference League games against Vitesse and Paços Ferreira.

With Spurs now having a strong roster of central defenders to pick from in the first team, and the likes of Ashley Phillips and Alfie Dorrington being highly rated among the youth prospects, it seems the time had come for Lyons-Foster to move on and find regular football.

The statement shared on the club’s website reads: “We have reached agreement with HJK Helsinki for the transfer of Brooklyn Lyons-Foster… We thank Brooklyn for his contributions to our Academy and wish him well for the future.”

Helsinki are currently in their pre-season, with the Finnish Veikkausliiga kicking off again in April and running through to October. So, Lyons-Foster will now join up with his new club and prepare for the new campaign.

Lyons-Foster had previously been spotted in first-team training back in the summer of 2023, but was unable to push on and find a place in Ange Postecoglou’s senior squad this season.

It’s a shame to see Brooklyn Lyons-Foster move on, but it’s probably for the best. When you get to 23 years old and still haven’t been able to break into the first team properly, your time is pretty much coming to an end. He should get plenty of football over in Finland, and we wish him all the best.
