Blue Jays Predicted To Land $108 Million Padres Ace In Blockbuster Trade

The San Diego Padres are reportedly listening to offers for their ace Dylan Cease. Cease is entering his walk year and it doesn’t seem as though the Padres are very confident in re-signing him, so trading him before he walks in free agency may be the best option.

Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer recently pitched a trade idea that would send Cease to the Toronto Blue Jays for a package of two pitchers.

Here’s the trade pitched by Rymer which would send Cease to the Blue Jays: Toronto Blue Jays receive: RHP Dylan Cease San Diego Padres receive: RHP Yariel Rodríguez, LHP Ricky Tiedemann (No. 4 prospect) “This isn’t really based on anything, but Toronto is clearly open to adding a No. 1 starter.

Otherwise, the club would not have been willing to offer Corbin Burnes more money than it has ever given to a single player,” Rymer wrote. “With the Blue Jays now left to consider Plan Bs, their eyes frankly should be on Cease.

This trade would get the Padres under the luxury tax threshold, as Rodríguez’s $6.4 million AAV is less than half the $13.7 million that Cease is projected to make.

“Of course, going from Cease to Rodríguez would be a downgrade. But Rodríguez is at least a usable pitcher, and the downgrade would be easier to swallow if the Padres win the Rōki Sasaki sweepstakes. For his part, Tiedemann would be an upside play for San Diego.”

This trade makes sense for both sides.

The Blue Jays would land a bona fide ace who they could re-sign in the offseason. Cease would sit atop one of the better rotations in baseball.

The Padres would get great value from their ace instead of watching him leave in free agency a year from now. Both Rodríguez and Tiedemann are promising arms in the Blue Jays’ system.
