Sunderland’s 0-0 draw against Burnley boasted a lot of positives. Unfortunately for Wilson Isidor, there were two big negatives, after the Frenchman missed twice from the spot.

Sunderland remain in 4th place of the Championship table after their 0-0 draw against Burnley on Friday. For Regis Le Bris’ side, it’s another solid point and performance on the road, against very strong opposition in Burnley.

But a win was achievable on the night, and it would’ve drawn them level on points with leaders Leeds United. Wilson Isidor had two chances to score form the penalty spot but the Black Cats’ top scorer missed them both.

Pundit Gary Bennett was fuming with Isidor after the Burnley game. It appeared as though Isidor insisted on taking the second penalty, despite missing the first, later leaving the field in tears after full-time.

Indeed, there were plenty of Sunderland fans on social media who were venting their frustrations at the Frenchman. But there were more supporting him and reminding everyone just how important he’d been so far.

Soon after full-time, Isidor posted an Instagram story with a lengthy message to Sunderland fans, largely apologising for the two penalty misses and labelling Friday as ‘the worst day of my life’.

Isidor’s message read: “Feel like a big slap in the face, and the worst day of my life because all of us know how I love this club. Even if only act on the pitch can make forgive, I would like to apologise on my teammates, every single fans and all the person of this club for what happened tonight.

“I feel really ashamed, but I promise you that I will come back stronger from this! See you Tuesday, HWTL. And also big love for all the messages of support from the real one.”

After the game, Le Bris also defended and supported Isidor over the penalty misses. But interestingly, and perhaps bizarrely, the Sunderland boss hailed the Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford.

Trafford was time wasting for both penalties, trying to get into the mind of Isidor which clearly he did.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Le Bris said of Trafford: “It’s smart, I think, because it’s a way to break the rhythm, and probably you can introduce a doubt. I should say it’s smart, because at the end of the day it worked for them.”
