Newcastle United told they will have to break their transfer record again to sign Benjamin Sesko this summer
Newcastle United have long held an interest in Solvenian striker Benjamin Sesko and reports suggest that the Magpies are still weighing up a summer move.
The RB Leipzig striker was on Newcastle’s radar before he joined the Bundesliga outfit from their sister club, RB Salzburg but didn’t act beyond holding initial talks.
Benjamin Sesko is living up to the promise he has shown with eight goals and two assists from 17 Bundesliga appearances this season.
His exploits have caught the attention of several big clubs but one of the frontrunners for his signature are Arsenal who have been constantly linked with Newcastle striker Alexander Isak.
Benjamin Sesko is available for £67 million this summer
The Chronicle are now reporting that Sesko has an €80 million (£67 million) release clause in his contract and that is expected to be activated in the summer.
If Newcastle were to act on that, it would make Sesko their most expensive signing, eclipsing the £63 million they paid for Alexander Isak.
We don’t see much sense in making this move, in all honesty, as having both Isak and Sesko on the books while Eddie Howe plays with one centre-forward is only going to cause upset to one of them.
Signing Sesko just to spite Arsenal is a new level of pettiness – let’s do it
Of course, it would be worth doing just to spite Arsenal, but on the flip side, if the Gunners can land Sesko they can finally shut up about Isak.
Newcastle desperately need a new striker as a backup for Isak, but having two strikers of such high quality would really create as many problems than it would solve, which is why we have little confidence in being able to convince Jonathan David to join Newcastle this summer.
Having two top strikers would be a very nice problem to have, obviously, and we’re not saying we don’t want Sesko or David, we’re just looking at it practically.
