Failed Bears Coach Lands Surprise New Job
The Chicago Bears’ 2024 season saw the first in-season firing of a head coach in franchise history. As a result, offensive coordinator Thomas Brown became Chicago’s interim head coach. Brown led the team to a 1-5 record as an interim head coach, with his only victory being over the Green Bay Packers in Week 18.
The team’s poor performance in Brown’s six games as head coach made it nearly impossible for him to be hired as the Bears’ next head coach. Because of this, it came as no surprise when Brown was relieved of his duties in favor of the new head coach, Ben Johnson.
Luckily for Brown, it didn’t take him long to get a new job. According to Mark Daniels of MassLive, the New England Patriots are hiring Brown to their offensive coaching staff as a tight ends coach and pass game coordinator.
New England Patriots Hire Thomas Brown to Coaching Staff
Brown landing on his feet so quickly shouldn’t be a surprise to Bears fans. Even though he didn’t have success in the win column as interim head coach, his leadership qualities shone through in Chicago.
When Brown took over as offensive coordinator, he was able to help Caleb Williams improve. Although he wasn’t able to necessarily continue that as interim head coach, Brown’s ability to adapt quickly to a new role showed.
As interim head coach, Brown took accountability for his team’s failures during his press conferences, which was a welcomed change from the coach who was fired. Moreover, it seemed as though Brown connected well with his players and may have been able to change the culture if he had more time.
The brief peak Bears fans got into Brown’s personality as interim head coach seems like it fits well with Mike Vrabel’s
coaching style. That said, Chicagoans wouldn’t be surprised if Brown one day becomes a head coach in the NFL.
