Newcastle star breaks down in tears as he flies out to complete £10m transfer
Miguel Amorim has agreed personal terms with Atalanta United and will put pen to paper on the deal in the next 48 hours, and the midfielder couldn’t hide his emotions as he bid farewell to his Newcastle team-mates
Miguel Almiron broke down in tears as he said goodbye to his Newcastle team-mates – with the playmaker on the brink of leaving the Premier League club.
Almost exactly six years since joining the Magpies from Atlanta United, Almiron is flying out to the United States to complete his £10m move to his former club.
The 30-year-old has agreed personal terms with the MLS outfit and will put pen to paper on the deal in the next 48 hours.
Almiron has struggled for game-time at St James’ Park this season having notched up almost 200 games since Rafa Benitez signed him in 2019.
He made his final appearance as a substitute in Saturday’s 3-1 win at Southampton and after the final whistle, the Paraguay international had his name loudly chanted by the travelling fans.
Confirming the move is imminent and weeks of negotiations, his agent Daniel Campos said: “He’s got a long-term contract which is what he was looking for.
“It’s a big step because he’s had some very good moments at Newcastle but his new club are putting together a very competitive team.”
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe touched on speculation linking Almiron away from the club last week and admitted there had been interest – but said he was still a “valuable member” of the squad.
“I think Miggy’s head has been very, very solidly here. He’s been brilliant in training this week and I’ve seen not one moment where I thought ‘oh, I need to address this or speak to him or have a deeper conversation’.
“I think we’re both aware of the situation. Yes, there is interest in him from other clubs. There is potentially a chance he could leave before the window, but until that moment, and if that moment never arises, he’s still a valuable member of the squad.”
After his apparent farewell to fans at St Mary’s last weekend, Howe added: “I just felt it was imperative that we got him to the front. And everyone acknowledged he’s been unbelievable for us. His attitude, his commitment, the way he’s played. I’m not saying it’s a goodbye. We don’t know what’s going to happen. But I just thought it was a great moment for him.”
