The winter transfer slammed shut at 11pm on Monday night and Everton managed to get one addition through the door at Goodison Park.

Carlos Alcaraz has joined Everton from Flamengo on an initial loan deal which will become mandatory if certain clauses are activated.

David Moyes was keen to sign a striker, however, the club failed to strike a late deal despite their best efforts.

Everton saw a £10m bid rejected for Tom Fellows whilst there was talk of Sunderland’s Tommy Watson potentially making the move to Merseyside.

Ultimately, the positive injury news about Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Armando Broja meant there was no pressing need to push the boat out and risk breaching PSR.

Whilst those two are set to make an early return from the sidelines, Moyes, in the meantime, could now promote an Everton academy star to help provide Beto with support up front.

David Moyes could now promote Martin Sherif to Everton first-team

After missing out on a striker in the transfer market, that leaves Beto as the only fit and available first-team striker at the club.

So evidently, over the next few weeks given the current injuries, Moyes will have to be creative and find a solution to help the towering frontman.

Moyes believes Ndiaye can play as a striker, whilst there’s also been a suggestion that Alcaraz could be utilised in that role if needed.

Academy striker Martin Sherif could get his big break having featured on Moyes’ bench over the last few weeks.

Sherif has netted 28 times across 69 outings for the under-18s and 21s over the last couple of seasons, so he appears to be the most natural understudy to Beto.

The 18-year-old has been capped at youth level by the Netherlands.

Leighton Baines told Sherif he needs to work on his hold-up play

Speaking after signing his first professional contract back in 2023, Sherif explained that Leighton Baines was eager for him to improve his hold-up play,

“Leighton spoke to me about my hold-up play and he used Dominic Calvert-Lewin as a good example,” the Dutch forward said.

“Kieran (Driscoll – Under 18s assistant head coach) has helped with my composure in front of goal. Both of them have been really helpful to me, so I appreciate that.”

Baines is now working with the first-team set-up, so he’ll be extremely familiar with Sherif and will have a good judgement on whether he’s ready to make his debut for Moyes.
